‘It’s not that I’m afraid to die. I just don’t want to be there when it happens’.
So quipped the actor Woody Allen as he contemplated the one reality we all must face. But it is not just our own death that we will experience some day. We will also experience the loss which death brings when it claims a loved one, be that a mother or father, husband or wife. brother or sister, son or daughter. Such an experience brings pain and sadness, something to which the Bible is not oblivious as evidenced in the ministry of Jesus who wept at the graveside of his friend Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary.
WHEN SORROW COMES is a short four part evening series in which we consider what the Bible says about death and dying, bereavement and loss. We begin with ’The Reality of Suffering’ turning to the experience of Job. We then turn to the Book of Lamentations as we think of ’The Pain of Loss’, then to Psalm 23 and to ’The Valley of the Shadow of Death’ and finally to Romans Ch. 8 and ’The Hope of Glory’.
This is a series for young and old alike since none of us know how and when death will strike. But though we sorrow we do not grieve as others do who have no hope.
WHEN SORROW COMES runs over four Sunday nights – 16 & 23 February and 1 & 15 March.
